The history of United Kosher Dairy

Josef Benhamou, veteran kashrus supervisor and Chalav Yisrael production expert, in fact began his career as a boy, on frequent visits to his family’s dairy farm in France’s Alsace Region.

18 years ago, upon completing yeshiva studies, Mr. Benhamou returned to the farm — this time as kashrus supervisor at the Herzberg-Bollag Family dairy farms in Zurich, where he oversaw milk powder and cheese production for five years.

The years that followed saw Benhamou rise to the position of head kashrus supervisor of all dairy operations at Lactalis France under the OU, a position he held for over 10 years (and which is held today by Rav Yisroel Hollander), working under then director Dr. Loko (Pascal Desbois serves as director today).

Fully conversant in all areas of dairy production, Benhamou noted several years ago that quality, efficient production of Chalav Yisrael milk and dairy products had yet to be realized on a scale that met the needs of the burgeoning Torah-observant community world-wide. Today, after three years of research, Benhamou has established and heads the companies UKD, Ltd. in Switzerland and United Kosher Dairy LLC in New York. UKD is now producing together with several U.S. dairy plants and has achieved significant supply capabilities of Chalav Yisrael products. All products are under the kashrus certification of the Badatz Eida Hachareidis, CRC, Hisachdus Harabbanim of the U.S. and Canada and the OU.
